Meet...The Nifty Knitters
Eighty one year old Trabuco Canyon resident Virginia Owens is getting a little chuckle out of seeing how the popularity of knitting has taken off over the last few years. So many people are discovering what she has known since she was 11 years old --- knitting if fun!
Fun indeed is what draws together a weekly group of ladies who have unofficially dubbed themselves "The Nifty Knitters".
Initially the group met when they all happened to sign up for a knitting class. Once the class started, the ladies found that while everyone had different levels of knitting skills everyone was willing to help each other and exchange ideas and techniques on knitting. When the class ended, the group had formed such a bond that they decided to start meeting on their own to crochet and knit.
"We don't care if you crochet or knit or whether you're a beginner or professional," said Correl Lee, "There's always someone available to help you take your skills to the next level if you want to learn."
Shortly after The Nifty Knitters started gathering, they were soon knitting lap blankets and donating them to a Lake Forest nursing home. Now in addition to lap blankets, the Nifty Knitters also knit blankets and beanies that are donated for premature babies.
Coto resident Rita Ledingham looks forward to the group's weekly gathering.
"We are so fortunate to have the Bell Tower Regional Community Center here for us to meet at each week. It's the perfect setting for us to meet and spend together. It also feels good to produce products that are then donated and actually used to help another person."
The Nifty Knitters meet each Wednesday at the BTRCC at 12:30 pm and welcome anyone interested in learning how to crochet or knit to join the group.
